Friends:

Vegetables and Fruits: beets, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, corn, cucumbers, eggplants, radishes, potatoes, and tomatoes*

Herbs and Flowers: borage, catnip, chamomile, dill, sage, savory, marigolds and nasturtiums

* pole beans work best with corn, potatoes, and radishes, and members of the cucurbit family

To Grow:

Bean seeds germinate after the ground temperature has reached at least 60 degrees. Wait until after the danger of frost has passed before planting them outdoors. Bush beans can be planted throughout the summer. Read the back of your seed packets carefully before planning which seeds to plant when. The range of days from planting to maturity can vary wildly among bean varieties. If you’re planting later in the season for a fall crop, add a week on to the “days until maturity.”

I tend to add a few bush bean seeds wherever I have room, and many bean seeds have made their way into my front flowerbeds. Pole beans only need to be planted once, though those in warmer climates can plant a second succession.

Each seed should be planted about 2-3 inches apart in the ground, at a depth between 1 and 2 inches. As the seedlings emerge, they should be thinned so that they are 3 to 4 inches apart.
